This volume critically analyses Muslim Personal Law (MPL) in India
and offers an alternative perspective to look at MPL and the
Uniform Civil Code (UCC) debate. Tracing the historical origins of
this legal mechanism and its subsequent political manifestations,
it highlights the complex nature of MPL as a sociological
phenomenon, driven by context-specific social norms and cultural
values. With expert contributions, it discusses wide-ranging themes
and issues including MPL reforms and human rights; decoding of UCC
in India; the contentious Triple Talaq bill and MPL; the Shah Bano
case; Sharia (Islamic jurisprudence) in postcolonial India; women's
equality and family laws; and MPL in the media discourse in India.
The volume highlights that although MPL is inextricably linked to
Sharia, it does not necessarily determine the everyday customs and
local practices of Muslim communities in India This topical book
will greatly interest scholars and researchers of law and
jurisprudence, political studies, Islamic studies, Muslim Personal
Law, history, multiculturalism, South Asian studies, sociology of
religion, sociology of law and family law. It will also be useful
to practitioners, policymakers, law professionals and journalists.

Water resource systems and technologies are important fields in
engineering today. This book will discuss various areas on water
resource management. Topics discussed include water harvesting
techniques, waste water purification, and urban water systems as
well as concrete, pavement, and mortar stabilizers, and earthquake
resistance technologies and how they relate to water management
systems.
The thread of self-organization which is now recognized as
permeating many dynamical transformations in diverse systems around
us seems set to unleash a revolution as influential as that of
Darwin in the last century. Darwin removed the 'originator' of a
species; self-organization now seeks to remove the 'organizer' from
an organism. Methods of nonlinear dynamics have played a crucial
role in opening up this field and if these methods have a
progenitor it is Henri Poi~care (1854 - 1912) whose first
substantial compilation amongst his prolific productio~ was Les
Methodes Nouvelles de la Mecanique Celeste, Vol 1. Thi~

The living organisms and systems possess extraordinary properties
of programmed development, differentiation, growth, response,
movement, duplication of key molecules and in m any cases higher
mental functions. But the organisms are physical objects so they
must follow laws of physics yet they do not seem to obey them.
Physicists cannot easily persuade themselves to accept this as
finally true. Non-living objects are governed by these laws of
physics and they can explain these properties. However, in the
living systems too phenomena encountered like coupled non-linear
interactions, manybody effects, cooperativity, coherence, phase
transitions, reversible metastable states are being understood
better with the aid of powerful theoretical and experimental
techniques and hope is raised that these may let us understand the
mysteriousness of life. Contributors to this volume are a small
fraction of rapidly growing scientific opinion that these aspects
of living bodies are to be expected in a hitherto inadequately
suspected state of matter which is in the main directed by these
physical properties pushed almost to limit. This state of matter,
the living matter, deserves to be called The Living State. Mishra
proposes that given hydrogenic orbitals, atoms showing easy
hybridisability and multiple valances, molecules with low-lying
electronic levels, "loosestructure," and a metabolic pump in
thermodynamically open system, various fundamental properties of
living state can emerge automatically. Structurally these are all
known to be present.

The themes covered in this volume touch upon wide ranging issues
starting from economic growth and outlook for India vis-a-vis China
and Pakistan, India in the international economy, strategic
management to make public enterprises globally competitive to the
crisis in Indian education, emerging disparities in India and an
economic analysis of Judicial activism. It also incorporates
seminal writings on public sector viz., public enterprises and
evaluation, the future of public sector in India and emerging role
of independent directors in the board room.
Ports along the 7,517 odd Kilometer long peninsular coastline of
India have suddenly become the cynosure of investor and public
policy attention in India. Cumulative pressure for widespread
policy-related reforms in the port sector coupled with growing
investor interest in taking up port projects has been building up
ever since the country embarked on the path of economic
liberalization and opened its doors to forces of globalization. The
pace of growth has particularly gathered momentum since the
government invited private sector participation in development of
port infrastructure, especially in designated major ports of the
country in 1996. The story of India's efforts to modernize its port
infrastructure and bring them on par with the international
benchmarks arguably got a kick-start with the establishment of
Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT). Overall
macro-economic development objectives of public policy rather than
considerations of business and enterprise-level efficiency and
optimization of port organizations have guided much of the
understanding about the working of the ports in the country. The
report covers the details of around 12 Ports situated in th
This Book focuses on the Credit and Risk Analysis carried out by
the Banks during appraisal of a loan proposals for Large Corporates
i.e., with a turnover of above 500 crores. The Book focusses about
the fundamental aspects involved in the Credit Appraisal and
associated Risk Management. The Book deals from the perspective of
a Bank and the Regulatory Norms as stipulated by the Regulator of
Banking System in India i.e., Reserve Bank of India. The report is
a descriptive study with basic objective of understanding
procedural aspects involved in the Credit Appraisal and Risk
Management before and after sanctioning of Bank Credit to the Large
Corporate enterprises. During Credit Appraisal, Bank needs to do a
360 assessment of the proposal submitted by the Corporate by
verifying its managerial integrity and commercial, technical,
financial viability. It has been observed that the Credit risk
management enables bank to identify, assess, manage proactively,
and optimize their credit risk.
Finance was not considered so important for business organizations
before the industrial revolution because methods of productions
were very simple, labor was more important than capital and finance
at that time. So these things didn't create any problems. Nowadays
finance is considered as the life blood of every business and
achieved the most important place in today's business. Any business
whether large scale or small scale requires finance for its
operations. So many businesses approach the lending institutions at
some point or the other in order to get some finance in terms of
loans. A lending institution appraises the proposal and then
decides whether to lend the money or not. This process is generally
termed as credit appraisal. Credit appraisal is a process of
assessing the credit worthiness of a borrower. The process of
credit appraisal has assumed increased significance, particularly
during the time of economic downturn .The book is a comprehensive
and a thorough examination of the components of a project. The area
of study in Corporate Banking in Indian Overseas Bank would
include- Working Capital Financing and Term loan financing.
This book discusses on mutual fund industry in detail, the impact
of various scrips on the performance of the mutual funds. The book
also discusses on some of the tools and concepts to measure
performance of mutual funds such as average daily return and risk
in stock market to compare with the market indicator, Jenson's
ratio, Treynor's ratio, Sharpe's ratio, and Fama's model. In the
final stage we also discuss about the Investment priorities of
different Investors and evaluate on how investors view mutual
funds. Also focuses on the investment procedure of mutual funds,
investor's preference regarding mutual funds, and motivational
factors of mutual fund investors.
The CAPM model which was developed by Sharpe (1964), Lintner
(1965), and Black (1972) was largely supported by Black, Jensen and
Scholes (1972), Fama and Macbeth (1973) and Blume and Friend
(1973). Later this method was questioned on various grounds. Our
book mainly focuses on the estimation of 19 PSBs and PSFIs returns
for the period of 1998-2010 using the CAPM frame work. Further this
paper compares the CAPM returns with that of the Annual Market
Returns (AMR). We have selected these PSBs and PSFs on the basis of
the companies quoted in the BSE stock Exchange in India for the
period 1998-2010. The study states that most of the companies
scrips are undervalued and have not rewarded the investors
properly.
This Book focuses on the Influence of Corporate Financials with
Equity Returns. Since the economic and industry-specific factors
are common for all the companies in an industry, it is expected
that the underlying performance of the companies determines the
returns from the equity shares of companies in the industry.
Further the analysis progresses with inter-comparison and
cross-verification of the individual companies in the industry with
the corresponding private sector company on a sample basis.
Therefore, the present study has carried out an industry-wise
investigation whether equity returns are influenced by the
corporate fundamentals or not, and also a general performance of
the various parameters of the financial institutions has been
carried out. For the purpose, public and private sector financial
institutions have been selected. The sample scrips selected are
PSB's quoted at BSE, consistently during the period 1992-93 to
2008-09 were selected. It has been found from the regression
results that the book value of share and dividend per share are the
only independent variables which significantly impact the equity
returns.
The General objective is to study the past performance of the staff
co-operative society by considering the past financial Statements
and suggest measures to improve the financial performance. To study
the liquidity, profitability and etc the tools of ratio analysis
like current ration, super quick ration, debt -equity ratio are
used, to study the performance over a period of time Comparative
and common size statements are used the tools are used to analyze
and interpret the performance over the study period. The study
would enable the management to take decision on cost cutting
measures, cost of capital, and capital budgeting decision of the
society. This would become a guiding research for the future as
this is the first kind of report submitted in the history of the
co-operative society beginning from 1965 onwards. The study would
enable the management to take decision on cost cutting measures,
cost of capital, and capital budgeting decision of the society.

The power system has seen many strides in the past. The recent
introduction of reform and restructuring of power industry has
imposed further challenges to planners and operators, since new
operational strategies are to be adopted over existing system, in
order to maintain system security, reliability and supply quality.
Introduction of power electronic devices and their application for
interfacing distributed generation from renewable energy sources
and existing grid is inevitable. However, they have given rise to
newer problems which need to be addressed. Thus, enormous
challenges are being faced by present day power industries which
require efficient planners, technology, solution methods and
software to address their problems effectively. The present book
aims to put before readers the current problems faced by the power
sector and the attempts being made by experts to solve them.
The SOLARIS 2012 conference focussed on solar radiation modelling
and day lighting, solar thermal (ST), photovoltaic (PV), renewable
energy resources (RES), climate change (CC), food processing
industries/rural development (FRD), and life cycle cost analysis of
renewable energy sources (LC). These proceedings from the
conference will be of interest to students, teachers, researchers,
scientists, engineers and users involved in renewable energy in
general and solar energy in particular. Manufacturers will also
find these proceedings useful.
Laparoscopic hernia repair is a relatively new surgical technique
to fix tears in the abdominal wall using small incisions, a patch
and special cameras to view inside the body. It frequently offers a
more rapid recovery for the patient, less postoperative pain, and a
quicker return to work and normal activities. (LapSurg.org). This
concise guide discusses the latest procedures in laparoscopic
hernia repair. Beginning with chapters on the history of hernia,
imaging and equipment, the following sections discuss surgical
procedures for different types of hernia. Nearly 400 colour images
and illustrations are included, as well as two DVD ROMs

'Climate change' and 'sustainable development' involve complex
interactions between climatic, environmental, economic,
institutional, social, political and technological processes at
global level. They cannot be addressed or comprehended in isolation
of broader societal goals. The papers in the book examine these
twin aspects that contribute towards global development and thus
present the various efforts undertaken by the researchers,
academicians and policy makers in this direction. The book while
dealing with current research and development in climate change and
sustainable development, also discusses about the significance of
natural resource management for sustainable development. It covers
the issues of topical interest viz., carbon emission trading,
organic farming, waste water management, impact of land use,
special and temporal variation of rainfall, concepts of green
building, sustainable agriculture, resource recovery mechanism,
disaster risk reduction initiatives, GHG emissions, environmental
regulations etc. Written by leading experts, the diverse chapters
dovetailed in the volume serve the interests of all sections of the
society who are working in the areas of climate change and
sustainable development. Practicing engineers, environmental
managers, academicians, researchers, research scholars, students
and government officials will consult this book as an essential
guide to help mitigate and adapt the effects of climate change and
sustainable development.

After many decades of existence for the public sector in India,
there are still many questions unanswered. Though the Government
has delegated financial and administrative powers to PEs (public
enterprises) to a great extent to provide considerable financial
leverage for taking prudent decisions, the results are not
satisfactory. It has been several decades since the MoU system has
been introduced in India in the hope of incentivising performance,
yet there are considerable numbers of PEs which are languishing in
the fair and good category in terms of performance. Performance
challenges still exist in public sector enterprises which are
mainly due to inadequate systems, processes, and latest technology.
The focus now is on making the PEs more efficient and competitive
so that they can face the stiff market competition. There is a
clear direction that has been set with the Performance Management
Division taking lead and rolling out the overarching PMS and
implementing RFD. The RFD system provides a comprehensive framework
of performance measurement and management for all the government
departments/ministries, to develop performance plans in sync with
the national priorities and prog-rammes. With the RFD system in
place, it will give greater stability to the MoU system and make it
sustainable.
